Middle School

Our Middle School programme helps students build strong academic foundations, grow in confidence, and thrive in a supportive, internationally minded environment.

The Middle School years are a crucial phase in a young person’s life. During early adolescence, the brain undergoes profound development, enhancing decision-making, self-control, and planning. This makes it an ideal time for students to ask big questions, take on new challenges, and begin shaping the independent learners and thoughtful individuals they are becoming.

At the Canadian School of Milan, Middle School marks the beginning of the Cambridge Lower Secondary curriculum, an internationally recognized programme that provides clear structure, consistent progression, and strong academic foundations. This pathway prepares students effectively for the IGCSE examinations, while also maintaining the inquiry-driven, curiosity-based approach that is at the heart of our school ethos.

From Grade 6, students are taught by subject specialists, giving them access to a wide range of expertise and teaching approaches. New subjects are introduced at this stage — including French, Art & Design, and Drama — broadening both their knowledge and their opportunities for self-expression.

Students are given purposeful homework tasks and receive personalised feedback that supports their growth as independent, reflective learners. Their efforts and achievements are regularly acknowledged through a merit system that celebrates creativity, persistence, and progress.

Beyond academics, Middle School students are encouraged to take part in a vibrant co-curricular programme. Clubs include options such as Coding, Robotics, Creative Writing, and Environmental Action. Leadership and collaboration are further developed through opportunities like the Student Council, school assemblies, and inter-house challenges.

Public speaking and debate are woven into the student experience, helping to build communication skills and confidence. Students also engage in service initiatives and fundraising activities, often led by tutor groups, fostering social responsibility and global awareness.

Our goals for Middle School are:

  • Encourage independence and responsibility in students.

  • Foster trust between the school and families.

  • Create space for students to grow through both successes and mistakes.

Middle School at CSM offers a vibrant, supportive, and intellectually stimulating environment — one where students are challenged and cared for, where curiosity is valued, and where each child is empowered to develop into a capable, confident, and compassionate young adult.
